“We won’t find anything in this weather!” Jake shouted over the roaring wind, his ski mask ghost-like under the whipping snow. “We’ve got to get out of the storm. Now!”

Andrea shook her head, realized he wouldn’t be able to see her in the snowstorm and shouted, “There’s no way I’m backing off now we’re so close –”

She yelped in surprise as Jake took a firm grip of her arm and dragged her toward him. Andrea landed awkwardly on her knees as her snow-shoes tangled together. The weight of her rucksack slid forward, and the small cooking pot she’d tied to the top of it in hurried negligence whacked her resoundingly on the head.

Jake hauled her to her feet by the straps of her rucksack. He pressed his face against hers, his black eyes cold, his mouth curled in a snarl. “We’re not going anywhere! You’ve been nothing but trouble since we started, but I’m not getting myself killed because some chick wants to make a name for herself hunting a non-existent legend.”

Furious at the insult, Andrea pushed away from him. “I’ve been nothing but trouble? I hired you to take me across these mountains and you do as I say, not the other way around. You got that, buster?”

His eyes glowed an unpleasant shade of red. Andrea refused to back down, even as she wondered if she’d pushed him too far. But two days of non-conversation, grunted replies to her questions, and constant belittling — if not outright thwarting — of her search for evidence of the Yeti had led to this confrontation. He might have been the best guide to this part of the Himalayas but the man’s attitude was abominable.

As they faced off, the howling wind driving stinging slaps of sleet and snow against them, they heard a resounding crash. Something hard smashed against Andrea’s side. She lost her balance, reeled, stepped back… and found nothing. She barely had time to gasp as she began to fall, flinging out her hands to grab at something, anything.

One of Jake’s mittened hands caught her around the wrist. He stood on the ledge of the trail, hunkered down, his legs planted firmly on the ground as he strained to hold her weight. She looked down and saw her legs dangling in mid-air above the jagged rocks of the gorge below.

“Hold still,” Jake said, his teeth gritted at the strain. He pulled a knife wedged into the side of one of his snow boots, and she wondered for a second if he meant to finish her off. She sighed with relief as he cut the straps of her rucksack. It slid off and she watched it disappear into the gaping terrain below. But the loss of the rucksack had loosened Jake’s hold and his hands began to slide as he lost his grip.

She stared up at him, eyes huge. “Don’t let me go!”
